Caught this on one of my cameras looking down at my driveway, you can make the video full size and see it better, I walk my dogs often in the evenings but glad we took the night off, odds are it would of just ran but still…

Yikes! We’ve had people report cougar sightings in our neighborhood, I haven’t seen them myself. I’ve seen coyote’s before. I think the only time I’ve seen a bear in the wild was when I was in Alaska visiting family, though we do have them in SW WA.
Yah my wife has done good in the real estate business, I think I spent more money on the PLC cables than I made so the congrats go to her, but thank you… you I show a pic in the day time
When I lived in the SF Bay area we had cougars in the hills there and boars, I would not run across either
I never had to worry about bears back in Dallas, you do find Black Bears in parts of Texas but not Dallas. We would get coyotes, bob cats, and boars if you went a bit further out, hell farmers would sometimes pay people to hunt boars on there property they could cause such a problem for other livestock or crops.
Here in New Zealand the worst you probably need to worry about is an invasive possum from Aus, which is harmless, but sounds terrifying.
Called Opossum here. Your right, they sound like aliens when they scream.
And yup board hunting is a pretty good sport here. Companies will approach farmers/ranchers and strike a bargain. They let them fly helicopters over their land with a party of four or five, provide the guns, ammo, and charge a bloody fortune. Get this, each person gets a share of the overall kill. The tails are worth $30 dollars to the state. Each flight is worthe $500. Shoot enough and the whole thing could break even. (fifteen tails). Farmers/Ranchers get rid of the hogs and a pretty coin. The helicopter company makes a fortune and a bunch a hunters and Wannabes get their trophies. Lots of video’s on line.
When I lived in SC my neighbor went night boar hunting, they have AR’s with night scopes, I think the farmers paid them 50 for each one and then they would sell them to a couple BBQ joints on the way back, they had to drive to the coast for the hunt and then drop off the boars on the way back, he use to go about every other month, there were about 5 of them that went, they offer to take my but hell I through back my fish
I saw a Bob cat once but they were on the run when they saw me
I’ve never heard an opossum scream to be honest, so I can’t say, but possums….yeah, I straight up jumped the first time I heard it in the middle of the night.
My boar hunting has never been that fancy, hell only once I went boar hunting with a rifle, the other few times it was with a bow.
I think a lot of people underestimate how quickly boar can breed, they are like rabbits. IIRC a pair of hogs can have 5-15 per litter, they have 3 breeding seasons a year, and are sexually mature with 2/3 of a year. So one pair of hogs could have up to 45 babies a year, and it doesn’t even take a full year for the babies to start breeding.
Really don’t care what you call them, they both screech like banshees. And if either of them ran up and bit you do you really think you could tell them apart………………….me either.
If I got a chance to feel the fur, the tail, or the ears I probably could…considering they are both nocturnal, and likely to be screaming at me, I’m not sure I would bother.
Give them some fruit and you’ll get close to them, way less scarier than the US version of them, I still wouldn’t recommend patting them, but they’d probably run off before attacking you.
By the way, we send over one to NZ every time a Kiwi heads to Oz.
Bobcats and bears in the woods up north, but they turned away.
Here in the Detroit suburbs lots of raccoons and possums, but my dog chases off the ones he doesn’t catch.
The one animal my dog encountered ,that I thought when I saw them my dog could lose to, was a woodchuck from the golf course near me. My dog is 120# and can take me down if I showed fear and I seriously thought that 12# woodchuck was going to win. Nasty little thing.
BTW - I take it Ring only keeps videos for less than 12 days then they’re deleted? The link goes to a 0:00 long video of a black screen.
I’m going to admit something. I didn’t know a “woodchuck” was a thing. I knew groundhogs were a real thing, but I thought they were just passive blobs. TIL
