Also what limit on the file size?
7 zip and plain .zip
What happens when you hit 20gb limit?
I would think it would error out and they would want me to sign up for the next level
I agree plain zip, and 7z are great options. 7zip is just an all around wonder full tool that people should have. It can open all sorts of files, include CFB files (like FTView MERs, and APAs) and even VMWare Workstation VMDX files allowing you browse the virtual machines file system. It’s compression is top notch, and can create self extracting zip files like winrar.
As for the 20GB limit, that’s not a lot, depending on how popular this site gets that could easily get used up. And based on what you said on the other post it sounds like the next level up is a big cost increase.
I wonder if there is someway to force Discourse to use some third party storage for uploads? Then maybe you could stick with the cheaper plan, but the uploads gets stored elsewhere that just typically does storage for much cheaper. No clue if that’s even possible though, just a random idea.
Edit: There is mention on this page about configuring S3 compatible storage for uploads: Understanding Uploads, Images, and Attachments - Site Management - Discourse Meta
But there is a note that it is only applicable for self-hosted and Enterprise hosted sites, so not sure if that applies here or not. Also I have no idea about the pricing for S3 compatible storage.
PLCTalk has a 1MB limit unless you’re a paid member and rarely had an issue with that. When I did I uploaded to WeTransfer that would keep 5GB for 7 days for free.
For extensions along with .Zip I suggest .7z (which can be a little smaller) and .PDF as the only other ones needed. Unless you want to add Office files.
EDIT: Maybe .TXT
If you ever hit the limit is there a setting to delete oldest files first?
What ever you do PLEASE don’t go to this link
About the delete suggestion - they don’t allow you to delete files, you have to edit every post and remove the links
I would love to blacklist cloudfaries but fear that would stop me from accessing all the sites that use it, so I’m just on a personal quest to get everyone to stop using it.
